We summarize his qualities as follows:

  1. He was free from vice (anagha). (SB 1.1.6)
  2. He has studied (adhītāni) religious scriptures (dharma-śāstrāṇi), supplementary (Puranic) scriptures (purāṇāni) and histories (itihāsāni ca) under guidance.(SB 1.1.6)
  3. He has also (api) explained (ākhyātāny) them to others. (SB 1.1.6)
  4. He was the most senior (śreṣṭho) scholar of the Vedas (veda-vidāṁ) and knew (viduḥ) all great learned scholars (parāvara-vido) including Śrīla Vyāsadeva (bhagavān bādarāyaṇaḥ), the composer of the Vedas. (SB 1.1.7)
  5. Since he was a gentle (saumya) and submissive (snigdhasya) disciple (śiṣyasya), he was, in fact (tattvatas), endowed with (uta) all the secrets (guhyam) of the Vedas by his teachers (guravo) as a result of their favor (tad-anugrahāt) upon him. (SB 1.1.8)

One who (ya) thinks (vetti) the soul (enaṁ) a killer (hantāraṁ) and (ca) one (yaś) who thinks (manyate) it (enaṁ) killed (hatam) – they (tau) both (ubhau) are not (na) in knowledge (vijānīto) – the soul (ayaṁ) neither (na) kills (hanti) nor (na) is killed (hanyate). (BG 2.19) Is this fact true forever? The next verse emphatically confirms it to be true forever.

The soul (ayaṁ) neither (na) takes birth (jāyate) nor (vā) dies (mriyate) at any time (kadācin) – it had not (na) come into existence (bhūtvā), nor (vā na) will it ever come into existence (bhūyaḥ) in the future (bhavitā). The soul (ayaṁ) is unborn (ajo), eternal (nityaḥ), ever-existing (śāśvato) and primeval (purāṇo). It is not killed (na hanyate) when the body is killed (hanyamāne śarīre). (BG 2.20) How (kathaṁ) can a person (sa puruṣaḥ) who (ya) knows (vedā) the soul (enam) to be indestructible (avināśinaṁ), eternal (nityaṁ), unborn (ajam) and inexhaustible (avyayam) kill (hanti) anyone (kaṁ) and whom (kaṁ) can one cause to kill (ghātayati)? (BG 2.21)

In that case, what happens at death? Krishna gives an analogy to help us understand the point of death. As (yathā) a person (naro), giving up (vihāya) old garments (vāsāṁsi) that are worn out (jīrṇāni), puts on (gṛhṇāti) new (navāni) ones (aparāṇi), similarly (tathā), the embodied soul (dehī), giving up (vihāya) worn-out (jīrṇāny) bodies (śarīrāṇi), accepts (saṁyāti) new (navāni) ones (anyāni). (BG 2.22) This connects back to BG 2.13, where Krishna pointed out how a sober person is not bewildered by the change of body at the time of death.

One born (abhijātasya) into demoniac (āsurīm) assets (sampadaṁ) carries deceit (dambho), arrogance (darpo), pride (abhimānaś ca), anger (krodhaḥ), harshness (pāruṣyam eva ca), and (ca) ignorance (ajñānaṁ). (BG 16.4)

It is understood (matā) that the divine (daivī) assets (sampad) lead to liberation (vimokṣāya), whereas the demoniac (āsurī) lead to bondage (nibandhāya). Krishna reassures Arjuna that he is born (abhijāto ’si) into divine assets (sampadaṁ daivīm) and therefore he need not worry (mā śucaḥ). (BG 16.5)

In this world (loke ’smin), there are two (dvau) kinds of created beings (bhūta-sargau) – the divine (daiva) and the demoniac (āsura eva ca). The divine (daivo) has already been spoken about (prokta) at length (vistaraśaḥ). In fact, the content of the Bhagavad Gita so far has been primarily geared toward developing divine qualities. Now, we should hear (śṛṇu) about the demoniac (āsuraṁ) from Krishna (me). (BG 16.6)

Here is a basic introduction to the demoniac class. It represents the lower branches of the inverted banyan tree, which are developed by the modes of passion and ignorance. The demoniac (āsurāḥ) people (janā) do not (na) know (vidur) what they should do (pravṛttiṁ ca) and what they should not do (nivṛttiṁ ca). Neither cleanliness (na śaucaṁ) nor proper conduct (nāpi cācāro) nor truth (na satyaṁ) exists (vidyate) in them (teṣu). (BG 16.7)

Krishna now brings our attention to the higher and the lower branches of the tree.

Krishna gives an overview of the qualities born of the mode of goodness (representing the higher branches) first in the first three verses of chapter 16. Subsequently, Krishna gives us an elaborate sketch of the demoniac qualities (representing the lower branches), which are born of the modes of passion and ignorance.

[Sannyasi] Fearlessness (abhayaṁ), purity of existence (sattva-saṁśuddhir), installation on the platform of knowledge yoga (jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ), [Grihastha] charity (dānaṁ), controlled mind (damaś ca), sacrifice (yajñaś ca), [Brahmachari] the study of scriptures (svādhyāyas), [Vanaprastha] austerity (tapa), [all] simplicity (ārjavam), nonviolence (ahiṁsā), truth (satyam), freedom from anger (akrodhas), renunciation (tyāgaḥ), tranquillity (śāntir), aversion to faultfinding (apaiśunam), compassion for all living entities (dayā bhūteṣv), freedom from greed (aloluptvaṁ), gentleness (mārdavaṁ), modesty (hrīr), steadiness (acāpalam), [ksatriya] vigor (tejaḥ), forgiveness (kṣamā), determination (dhṛtiḥ), [vaisya] cleanliness (śaucam), freedom from aggression (adroho), [sudra] freedom from the passion for honor (nāti-mānitā) – these [26 qualities] exist (bhavanti) in one born (abhijātasya) into divine (daivīm) assets (sampadaṁ). (BG 16.1-3)

These qualities map well to the qualities necessary to support the specific varṇa (social order) and āśrama (spiritual order) in one’s progressive path to perfection.
