Success – Divine Mindfulness https://divinemindfulness.com Uncovering our divine self Fri, 02 Feb 2024 02:41:35 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=7.1 https://divinemindfulness.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cropped-divinemindfulness_logo2-1-32x32.png Success – Divine Mindfulness https://divinemindfulness.com 32 32 Importance of sleep before 10pm https://divinemindfulness.com/importance-of-sleep-before-10pm/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=importance-of-sleep-before-10pm Fri, 02 Feb 2024 02:40:28 +0000 https://divinemindfulness.com/?p=3189 The references below emphasize the importance of maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and getting sufficient sleep, aligning with the natural circadian rhythms of the body. Here is a summary:

  1. Circadian Rhythms:

The body has an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm that regulates sleep-wake cycles.
The circadian rhythm tends to align with natural light-dark cycles, making earlier bedtimes, such as before 10 pm, more conducive to optimal sleep.

  1. Healthy Sleep Habits:

National Sleep Foundation and American Academy of Sleep Medicine stress the importance of adopting healthy sleep habits, including consistent sleep schedules.
Going to bed before 10 pm is often recommended to ensure an adequate duration of sleep, as sleep needs vary among individuals.

  1. Sleep Duration Recommendations:

The CDC provides sleep duration recommendations for different age groups, highlighting the significance of getting enough sleep for overall health and well-being.

  1. Scientific Studies:

Scientific studies, such as those by Crowley et al. and Czeisler & Klerman, discuss the connection between circadian rhythms and sleep regulation, supporting the idea that aligning bedtime with natural biological rhythms can be beneficial.

  1. General Consensus:

The general consensus from these sources is that earlier bedtimes, particularly before 10 pm, can contribute to better sleep quality and overall health.

Story: Pippin’s Dream Mishap https://divinemindfulness.com/pippins-dream-mishap/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pippins-dream-mishap Tue, 14 Nov 2023 03:16:30 +0000 https://divinemindfulness.com/?p=3169 Once upon a time in a lively village, there was a cheerful potter named Pippin. Pippin had a few pots and was brimming with excitement about the prospect of selling them. “I’ll sell these four pots, make some money, and then I’ll have ten pots! And after that, twenty, thirty, and before you know it, I’ll be a millionaire!” he gleefully thought.

In his grand daydream, Pippin also imagined getting married and having a bunch of kids. “I’ll be the head of the house and boss everyone around,” he chuckled. He even pictured himself playfully kicking disobedient kids if they misbehaved.

But, oh my goodness! As he continued his imaginative kicks, he accidentally kicked the air so hard that he sent all the pots flying, and crash! They broke into a hundred pieces. Pippin’s dreams were instantly shattered.

Surprised and dismayed, Pippin looked at the broken pots and realized his big dreams had just turned into a big mess. “Well, that didn’t go as planned,” he mumbled to himself, scratching his head.

The village animals, who had been watching the whole scene, couldn’t help but giggle. A wise old owl hooted, “Maybe next time, don’t mix dreams of pots with dreams of kicking mischievous kids!”

Pippin laughed along with the animals, realizing the truth in the owl’s words. The moral of the story dawned on him: Dreams are wonderful, but it’s important to keep our feet on the ground and pay attention to what’s happening around us. So, dream big, but also be mindful of the pots in your life and take careful steps to turn those dreams into reality.

BG 18.72-73: Receiving the Gita into our life https://divinemindfulness.com/bg-18-72-73-receiving-the-gita-into-our-life/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bg-18-72-73-receiving-the-gita-into-our-life Sun, 08 Nov 2020 11:16:34 +0000 https://divinemindfulness.com/?p=2553 In this concluding section of the Gita, Lord Krishna, being the greatest teacher checks with His student, Arjuna on how Arjuna is receiving and processing the message of the Gita.

Krishna asks Arjuna (pārtha) whether (kaccid) this [message] (etac) was heard (chrutaṁ) by him (tvayā) with a single-pointed (ekāgreṇa) consciousness (cetasā) and whether (kaccid) his (te) ignorance (ajñāna) and illusion (sammohaḥ) were now dispelled (praṇaṣṭas). (BG 18.72) In other words, we can also expect our illusion and ignorance to be dispelled after attentively studying the Gita.

Arjuna acknowledges that his illusion (mohaḥ) is destroyed (naṣṭo) and he has regained (labdhā) his (mayā) memory (smṛtir) by Krishna’s grace (tvat-prasādān). He is firmly situated (sthito ’smi) free of doubt (gata-sandehaḥ). He is ready to execute (kariṣye) Krishna’s (tava) words (vacanaṁ). (BG 18.73) Therefore, the success of receiving the Bhagavad Gita in our life is determined by our inclination to execute Krishna’s words.

BG 06.37-44: Plight of an unsuccessful yogi https://divinemindfulness.com/bg-06-37-44-plight-of-an-unsuccessful-yogi/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bg-06-37-44-plight-of-an-unsuccessful-yogi Sun, 16 Aug 2020 12:17:21 +0000 https://divinemindfulness.com/?p=1543 Taking to a spiritual practice entails exercising a progressive and healthy detachment from the objects of pleasure within this material world. Understanding the difficulty of spiritual practice, and feeling uncertain about the ultimate success, Arjuna raises an important question, “What is the destination of an unsuccessful transcendentalist? Could such a yogi lose the merits of both the material and the spiritual progress? Just like a riven cloud when disconnected from a cloudbank and unable to attach itself to another cloudbank is simply blown away by the wind, would an unsuccessful yogi lose everything?” (BG 6.3739)

Lord Krishna gives an encouraging response. He first states an important principle: “A transcendentalist engaged in auspicious activities does not meet with evil either in this life or next. One who does good is never overcome by evil.” (BG 6.40) Then, Krishna elaborates further by considering two kinds of unsuccessful yogis – one who is unsuccessful after a short period of practice, and the other who is unsuccessful after a prolonged period of practice.

The yogi who gives up after a short span of practice becomes fortunate to be born into a pious and rich family, where one does not have to struggle for bare necessities of life and the conditions are suitable for reactivating the spiritual journey. (BG 6.41) A yogi is even more fortunate if he or she had practiced for a long period but desisted. Such a fortunate soul takes birth in a family endowed with transcendental wisdom by dint of culture and practice. Such a birth is indeed very rare and one gets the highest opportunity for the revival of spiritual consciousness. (BG 6.42)

What does it mean by being unsuccessful on a spiritual journey? It means that we stop inquiring into the Absolute Truth (e.g. asking fundamental questions like, “who am I?”, “What is the goal of life?”, “Who is God?”, “What is my relationship with God?”, “Why am I suffering?”, “How can I eradicate suffering once and for all?”, “What is the significance of this world?”, “What is the relationship between God and this world?”, etc.). The success of human life is dependent on the liveness of this spirit of inquiry. Upon getting a fortunate birth in a wisdom-equipped family, one revives the divine consciousness (buddhi-saṁyogaṁ) of the previous body (paurva-dehikam), and again (bhūyaḥ) endeavors for perfection (saṁsiddhau). (BG 6.43) One is innately attracted (hriyate) to the previous life’s practices (pūrvābhyāsena) and restores one’s inquisitive spirit (jijñāsur). (BG 6.44) In this way, there is no dearth of opportunity for us to make our life successful.

This life of material existence is just like hardwood and if we can carve Krishna out of it, that is the success of our life.
